The focus of these gatherings is on the study of drug plasma concentrations and the genotypes of specific enzymes responsible for drug metabolism. This area of research is of paramount importance as it directly impacts the effects and side effects of medications based on whether individuals are rapid or slow metabolisers.
Recent findings from an ongoing study by REALMENT partners have shed light on the relationship between individuals' metabolism rates and their responses to antipsychotic drugs. The study revealed that individuals who do not respond adequately to standard antipsychotic treatments, thereby requiring trials of different medications, are often rapid metabolisers. This insight suggests that these patients might benefit from higher doses of antipsychotic drugs. In addition, REALMENT is engaged in research to identify toxic metabolites of the antipsychotic drug clozapine, aiming to predict its adverse effects on white blood cells.
The primary objective of these pharmacokinetics meetings is to share critical data and seek collaborative partners for replication and validation analyses. Through these efforts, the initiative strives to improve treatment outcomes in psychiatry, moving closer to the goal of providing more personalised and effective mental health care.
