The REALMENT Project's Successful 2023

In its third year, The REALMENT project, centred on using real-world data (RWD), has been advancing steadily.

The project is demonstrating the potential of integrating data from multiple sources in developing safer, more effective treatments of higher quality for chronic mental health conditions. This year, REALMENT has played a pivotal role in narrowing the gap between clinical understanding and everyday experiences.

A major event this year was the consortium's annual meeting in Tallinn, held in June. This gathering offered a chance for partners to review progress and chart future courses for the various work packages (WPs). A key feature of the meeting was the stakeholders’ forum. Here, detailed discussions were held on data capture processes, gene discovery, and the development and validation of algorithms. Stakeholders emphasised the importance of patient involvement in clinical decision-making, from selecting medication options to developing accessible feedback tools.

The project's focus on garnering valid data from diverse sources was further explored, particularly regarding the 4MENT clinical management platform and the ethical standards for transparent data handling and result dissemination.

In addition to these efforts, the REALMENT project website has received a significant enhancement. A new resources section has been introduced, showcasing the latest news, publications, interviews, and relevant events. Throughout 2023, significant scientific publications have been released, concentrating on the impact of genetic biomarkers on treatment resistance, evaluating various treatments for mental disorders, and more.

The launch of REALMENT's first electronic newsletter in August, now readily available on the website, marked a significant milestone for the project in 2023. This digital communication tool enables stakeholders to receive updates about the project directly in their inboxes, ensuring they are kept informed about the latest developments and achievements.

Another highlight of the year was the launch of an interview series, accessible on the website, starting with Dr. Ole Andreassen, the project coordinator.  The interview serves as a deep dive into the key figures of REALMENT, featured in an exclusive area on the website. In the upcoming year, we aim at hosting more interviews in this section, providing the public with a unique opportunity to get a better understanding of the project.

Furthermore, REALMENT's outreach extended beyond the digital realm. The project marked its presence at significant events such as the ECNP in Barcelona (7-10 October 2023) and the Brain Innovation Days in Brussels (26-27 October 2023). These events, attended by experts, clinicians, policymakers, and industry professionals, featured the distribution of the new project leaflet at the different GAMIAN-Europe’s stands.

Looking forward, REALMENT seeks to be a game changer in mental health treatment. As the project coordinator, Dr. Ole Andreassen has stated earlier this year, more results are expected to be available next year, and they will be showcased on the website and social media. This way, researchers, patients, and the public can access easily and be informed about the latest breakthroughs of the project and the impact of these findings in the treatment of mental health conditions.
